Community-Based Care. Statewide Impact.

About Community Mental Health Centers

Kansas’ Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) form a statewide system of care, serving every county through more than 120 locations. Together, 25 licensed centers and over 4,500 professionals provide essential mental health services as a core part of the state’s behavioral health system.

Who We Are

Our Primary Goal

Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) provide quality care, treatment and rehabilitation in the least restrictive environment possible.

Services are available to anyone who needs them, regardless of income, age or type of illness.

Care is delivered in the community so individuals can continue living and functioning in their own homes, while reducing costs for individuals, payers and taxpayers.

Accountability

The 25 licensed CMHCs in Kansas each operate under a separate, duly elected or appointed board of directors.

Each board is accountable to the citizens it serves, county officials, the Kansas Legislature and the Governor, and maintains reporting responsibilities at the national level.

Shared Governance

Community Mental Health Centers are more than service providers. They are the county’s legally designated authorities responsible for managing mental health care in Kansas and serve as the local mental health authorities.

As a result, Kansas’ mental health system operates through shared governance between two governmental entities: the state and the counties.
